Comparison of happiness and perceived stress in athletes and non-athletes during coronary quarantineAbstractBackground and Aim

Exercise is a powerful tool in reducing stress and increasing happiness. Happiness can reduce perceived stress by affecting health and improving mood. The aim of this study was to compare the perceived happiness and stress in two groups of athletes and non-athletes in the corona quarantine period.

Methods: This descriptive-comparative research study was conducted in 2020 on 300 people from the general population of Iran who were selected by convenience sampling. The Oxford Happiness and Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSS-10) was used to collect data online.

Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22 using descriptive and analytical statistics tests (independent t-test and Pearson correlation).

Significance level was considered 0.05 for all tests. Results: Most of the studied samples were female (56%), married (66.3%) and had a bachelor's degree (34.7%). 20.7% of the samples were athletes and the rest were non-athletes.

The frequency of male athletes was higher than female athletes (71% vs. 29% and p <0.001). There was no significant difference between the two groups of athletes and non-athletes in terms of demographic variables. Happiness and all its components (life satisfaction, self-satisfaction, self-esteem, positive mood, positive energy) in athletes were significantly higher than non-athletes and perceived stress in non-athletes was higher than athletes (P <0.05).

There was a significant negative correlation between happiness score and its components with perceived stress (P <0.01).Conclusion: Athletes were happier and less stressed than non-athletes. Providing facilities for sports activities with increasing happiness in the community in order to reduce perceived stress seems necessary. Keywords: Happiness, Perceived Stress, Exercise, Quarantine
